En su libro “Our Mathematical Universe” Max Tegmark hace la pregunta “¿Cuándo estás?” no se limita, aunque lo menciona, a preguntarnos en dónde estamos lo que ya está contestado si nos ceñimos a lo que la geografía nos señala.

Tegmark va más allá, el **cuándo** le parece una pregunta más importante porque – matemáticas aparte – nos recuerda que:

1\.- Hacemos predicciones basándonos en supuestos

2\.- Comparamos observaciones con las predicciones, actualizamos los supuestos

3\.- Repetimos

Remata con un casi humilde: “Nosotros los científicos llamamos a un conjunto de supuestos, una ***teoría***…”.

La vida – faltaba más – pareciera ser un conjunto de supuestos que los de a pie llamamos experiencia y hace sospechar que cada uno de nosotros tiene su propia versión, su propia teoría, y - para no soltarle la mano a Tegmark -, su propio multiverso.

Éste cuándo del 2021 rebasó cualquier expectativa – buena y mala – de lo que podíamos esperar, esperanza y avance, retroceso y estupidez en cantidades industriales, nos hizo jirones la piel y dejó ver lo que tenemos dentro, si el 2020 fue enseñanza, el 2021 fue maestría y pareciera – spolier alert – que el 2022 será Doctorado.

El multiverso que me tocó en la rifa (no compré boleto) está habitado por varios protagonistas que admiro por varias razones y que me atrevo a enlistar con la única jerarquía que se me puede ocurrir: todos son intelectuales comprometidos con la verdad de su tiempo, de su cuándo:

**Viviana Hinojosa ([@Vivianolala](https://twitter.com/Vivianolala))**. – la principal razón por la que empecé a seguirla es su arte, fino y atemporal, luego me robó el corazón cuando empezó su campaña de recaudación de fondos y de concientización para ayudar a los niños con cáncer y hasta ahí todo bien y muy cool. Sin embargo, eso era sólo la tan manida punta del iceberg, la ingrata me robó el cerebro con el podcast de Pablo Majluf (si quieren saber quién es la antítesis de “la Señorita de las mañaneras que NO sabe leer” \[y ni peinarse\], escuchen el podcast) , luego  remató con su hashtag del “Yo defiendo al INE” que les alació las pestañas a los tembleques de la 4T, acepto que no fue sólo ella pero así mismo hay que reconocer que es de las pocas que se les planta, de frente y sin cortapisas a los agoreros del enano que habita Palacio Nacional. Ah, se me olvidaba: está muy chula (empiezo a sospechar que la que aparece en su perfil no es ella, es una modelo).

**Rosario in Paris ([@chayito09](https://twitter.com/chayito09))**. – Si alguien quiere saber de dónde viene y hacia donde va la pandemia hay que preguntarle a Rosario, no lo sólo entiende, sino que también explica a detalle los cómos y los porqués y, sobre todo, los “porqué nos” para darles el proverbial elotazo en el hocico a los chairos de infantería que se dedican a denostar la Ciencia y la Ética profesional que, es evidente, desconocen. Llegué a sospechar que al igual que Viviana Hinojosa, su foto, era de alguna modelo sacada de internet, pero no, con tantas “selfies” tomadas en Francia ya me hizo -cuando menos creer – que sí es ella.

**La Química Lau ([@OxytocinLau](https://twitter.com/OxytocinLau))**. – Otra que no canta mal las rancheras, y – a juzgar por fotos recientes – acompañadas de Mezcal y Vinos rojos. Siempre del lado de la Ciencia, con claridad y con compromiso intelectual desmenuza los artículos científicos relacionados con la Química y la Inmunología y también reparte elotazos al que no quiera entender. También sospecho que no es la de la foto de perfil, está muy chula y baso mi opinión en un detalle muy fino, casi oculto, al parecer, insisto: al parecer, se ríe de mis chistes, jamás una mujer tan guapa me ha prestado tanta atención.

**Jorge Leiner ([@jorg3leine](https://twitter.com/jorg3leiner))**. – este brother sabe de música, más música y de la historia de la música, escribe muy bien, y, como buen Escritor, levanta pasiones de las bajas que son buenas y de las malas que son mejores, me aclaró que el cabello claro de Elvis Presley no era tan claro y que sí se lo pintaba. Lo mismo habla de música que de películas – las que sean – a la menor provocación, nunca sin conocimiento de causa. Fui testigo de cómo un comentario – en mi opinión – tan intrascendente como elegir comprar o no, un pastel de queso (infiero pay de queso) levantó ámpulas entre (también infiero) chairos de infantería, que hasta quise sacar un hashtag: #cheesecakeeffect pero recordé que los chairos si bien hablan inglés, no lo entienden. Ah, todavía no compro su libro, pero ya lo haré en enero.

Cuándo estás?

Salir con alguien &ndash; en plan romántico &ndash; siempre (me) ha sido una tarea un poco difícil de entender o incluso llevar a buen término, pero nunca pensé que podría ser peligrosa.

Recientemente una chica me invitó a salir a tomar una copa “un día de estos” y “sin compromiso”, pero no supe que me extrañó más, si la fecha tan imprecisa o lo que implica dicho compromiso.

¿Compromiso de qué o para qué? de pagar la cuenta? para que yo le invite una copa también? Supongo que hay cierta reciprocidad social implícita al aceptar una invitación así, ¿pero compromiso?

Por razones que todavía no me quedan muy claras (mentira, me quedan muy claras, es una chica muy guapa) accedí a salir con ella a tomar un trago y fuimos a un lugar en el centro de la ciudad que está de moda, que según ella:

&ndash; Es un lugar muy hipster, te va a encantar, ¡vas a ver que sí! &ndash;

&ndash; Está bien, yo en realidad me siento bien en casi cualquier lugar que no sea muy ruidoso, en el que se pueda platicar, incluso debatir sin tener que gritar, pero, en fin, confío en tu buen gusto &ndash; Le dije.

&ndash; ¿Tenemos que ir a media tarde porque se llena muy rápido, está bien a las 6:00 PM? &ndash; Más que preguntar, casi ordenó.

&ndash; Ya vas que chutas, me parece bien &ndash; Le contesté sin pensarlo mucho, bien pudo haber dicho las 4:00 e igual hubiera aceptado.

El clima de San Luis se ha vuelto muy uniforme en los últimos años &ndash; siempre está de la chingada &ndash; pero esa tarde resultó estar más que soportable, medio nublado, sin ese sol que reseca la piel como chicharrón.

El sitio es más bien austero, con buena ventilación, muebles rústicos y &ndash; tengo que admitirlo &ndash; un ambiente hipster bastante agradable, sin muchas pretensiones y con suficiente alcohol como para desinhibir al más estirado. Apenas crucé el umbral de la entrada quedé un poco desorientado por la falta de iluminación en el lugar.

&ndash; Holis corazón ! &ndash; me habló una sombra desde la esquina del lugar.

&ndash; Hola, ¿cómo estás? &ndash; contesté sin estar completamente seguro si era ella o alguien más.

&ndash; Ven, siéntate aquí conmigo, ándale no muerdo… &ndash; estaba claro que notó mi indecisión.

&ndash; No es eso, es que casi no veo, está un poco oscuro aquí &ndash;

&ndash; ¿A pues tanto mejor no? &ndash; me reviró de inmediato con lo que adiviné fue una sonrisa coqueta.

&ndash; No si quieres leer un libro… &ndash; atiné a decir al mismo tiempo que me di cuenta de lo estúpido de mi comentario.

&ndash; Hmmm, supongo que tienes razón, ¿pero no venimos a leer verdad? &ndash;

&ndash; Ah no claro, tienes razón &ndash;

&ndash; Me tomé la libertad de pedirte un mezcal, estoy segura que te va a gustar &ndash; me dijo con mucha seguridad.

&ndash; Está bien, siempre y cuando no te tomes mi mezcal &ndash;

&ndash; Ja ja ja ja , nombre ¿cómo crees ? &ndash; rio con ganas.

El humor siempre me ha resultado un excelente instrumento de comunicación, ayuda mucho a vencer las barreras que usualmente levantamos para proteger nuestra intimidad, nuestras ideas personales y este es un caso así, pero creo que se me pasó la mano.

&ndash; ¿De dónde sacas tantas ideas tan raras? preguntó con interés.

&ndash; No sé, digo... ¿de dónde sacan los magos las palomas? Es sólo un truco… &ndash; le dije con cierta precaución.

&ndash; ¿O sea que es una habilidad estudiada, practicada? &ndash;

&ndash; Por supuesto, es como casi cualquier otra actividad, quizá la única diferencia es que en el humor se trata de decir lo más ridículo de la forma más inteligente posible &ndash;

&ndash; Qué interesante, ¿dónde leíste eso? &ndash;

&ndash; En ningún lado, o bueno, quizá sí, no lo sé, pero eso es lo que creo… &ndash;

&ndash; ¿Y tiene alguna finalidad específica? &ndash;

&ndash; Por supuesto, se trata de pasarla bien, de ver las cosas con otra perspectiva, ¿por qué crees que los músicos y los cómicos son tan queridos? &ndash;

&ndash; Tienes razón, y tú... ¿quieres pasarla bien conmigo? &ndash; me preguntó sonriendo sugestivamente tomando mi mano sobre la mesa.

&ndash; Eh, pues sí… digo, ¿nos la estamos pasando bien no? &ndash; dije un tanto extrañado, su actitud estaba cambiando un poco, no atiné a entender cómo, pero estaba cambiando.

&ndash; Pues déjame darte algo para que te la pases aún mejor… &ndash; se acercó y me besó, primero con delicadeza, sólo rozando mis labios, venciendo mi inicial pero breve resistencia y después con deleite, como si ya me conociera.

No podía creer lo que estaba pasando, ¿era el mezcal lo que provocó todo esto o el mezcal es sólo el pretexto para hacer lo que hizo? El ambiente cambió radicalmente, ya no era el mismo lugar ni la música, al llegar se escuchaban canciones de Oscar Chávez y ahora de Joaquín Sabina, después de 5 mezcales es difícil saber, pero la música no era lo misma que cuando llegué. Lo que al inicio era un lugar casi a oscuras ahora era un lugar de luz tenue, sensual, ¿otra vez, es el mezcal?

&ndash; ¿Qué tienes corazón, no te gusto? ¿Eres tímido? &ndash;  

&ndash; No, más bien soy miedoso, pero sí, sí me gustó, es decir, sí me gustas…&ndash;

&ndash; Esta bien, pero no quiero incomodarte, ¿quieres que vayamos a otro lugar, mi departamento…? &ndash;

&ndash; Me parece bien, sí, vamos &ndash; contesté sin dudar, pero sin saber en lo que me estaba metiendo, pronto lo iba a averiguar.

&ndash; Sólo deja voy al baño y nos vamos, ¿sale?

&ndash; OK, no te preocupes, tómate tu tiempo &ndash;

Aproveché para pagar la cuenta, no quise quedarme con ningún “compromiso”, además, la perspectiva de lo que yo imaginaba iba a suceder, sobrepasaba con mucho cualquier cuenta de unos tragos.

Ella tenía su coche estacionado a unos pasos del lugar y me invitó a subir.

Quise evitar que ella condujera, pero me paró en seco:

&ndash; Oh, ni se te ocurra, yo manejo, si con un beso te pones así de nervioso, no quiero ver cómo te pondrías manejando y yo haciéndote travesuras &ndash;  

&ndash; En eso tienes toda la razón, mejor maneja tú &ndash;

Una vez en el carro, ya de camino a su departamento, hubo un silencio incómodo, casi de película de suspenso, yo no sabía qué decir o que tema abordar para romper el silencio, siempre me ha costado trabajo retomar el hilo de una conversación una vez que cambio de lugar, de ambiente, de ritmo.

Fue entonces que volteé a verla y me pareció aún más bella de lo que parecía en el bar, su cabello brillaba con las luces de los autos al pasar, entonces noté un fulgor extraño al lado de su pierna, ¿era una pistola? ¿En serio? ¿Una pistola? Ella notó mi nerviosismo y me dijo:

&ndash; Tranquilo, es sólo para protegerme, en estos tiempos es peligroso andar así nada más

&ndash; Supongo que tienes razón &ndash; asentí aún más nervioso.

&ndash; Pero bien, ya llegamos, vamos a mi depa &ndash; me indicó con cierta premura.

&ndash; Claro, vamos &ndash; contesté poco convencido.

Al bajar del carro me abrazó con fuerza y me besó con gran intensidad, como si estuviera desesperada por algo, supongo que no la habían besado en mucho tiempo y fue entonces que me dijo al oído algo que jamás olvidaré:

&ndash; ¿Traes protección, corazón? quiero estar contigo… &ndash;

Ya no pude contestar, estaba claro que no traía protección, yo no uso pistola, jamás lo he hecho, hace mucho tiempo que ni navaja tengo, me la quitaron en el maldito aeropuerto en un viaje reciente. ¿Qué significaba eso? ¿Que había alguien en su departamento? ¿El barrio donde vive es muy peligroso? ¿Y por qué me dijo que quiere estar conmigo si ya estaba conmigo?

No me da vergüenza aceptarlo, salí corriendo de ahí, en estos tiempos en estas cuestiones de salir con alguien en plan romántico, es muy peligroso.

Con protección

That quote sounds as if it came from what the foreign policy elite in the Obama administration would call some “neocon nut job,” with an eerie echo of the blindly confident rhetoric from the early days of the U.S. occupation of Iraq in 2003. Except this time the speaker wasn’t a neocon nut job, and it was May 2012. Denis McDonough, then U.S. President Barack Obama’s deputy national security adviser, was taking a victory lap in a speech at a Washington think tank. And he wasn’t boasting about Iraq; __he was crowing about Libya__.

The Obama administration, “leading from behind” (a term used by an Obama adviser quoted in The New Yorker), had allowed NATO to bomb Colonel Muammar El Qaddafi’s army to oblivion, and the Libyan dictator had been killed by rebels on October 20, 2011, in his hometown, Sirte. Then, in 2012, in Libya’s first post-Qaddafi election, a secular party called the National Forces Alliance won the largest bloc of seats and gained 48 percent of the vote. All that was missing was video of beaming first-time voters dipping their thumbs in blue ink, Iraq-style. Democracy was on the march in Libya!

How did it all happen? The Obama administration’s foreign policy team has, throughout the seven and a half years of its life, touted its use of “smart power.” This, of course, was meant to stand in contrast to the preceding president, whose policies this administration viewed as the very definition of “dumb power.” In 2011, just a few months after the so-called Arab Spring erupted, the smart power crowd had a critical decision to make. Demonstrations and mounting violence in Libya against the regime had rattled Qaddafi, but he was determined to end the uprising, using overwhelming force against his own people if necessary. The U.S., France and Britain persuaded the United Nations to declare a no-fly zone in Libya that they would enforce, and on March 11, 2011, the French carried out the first strike. “We cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy,” Obama said.

The language was striking and, for Obama and his team, important. It implicitly invoked a doctrine known as “the responsibility to protect.” That doctrine was created by diplomats in the Canadian foreign ministry at the beginning of this century, but its most prominent champion is Samantha Power, Obama’s ambassador to the United Nations. Power, as a freelancer for this magazine, covered the war in Bosnia in the 1990s.

Outraged by what she saw there, she eventually wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning book, A *Problem From Hell*, in which she describes the ethnic cleansings in Bosnia and Rwanda and argues passionately that it is the obligation of the world’s foremost powers to prevent such genocides.

With Qaddafi promising a brutal crackdown, the conflict in Libya looked like a possible genocide in the making. D.C. was determined that this could not be a repeat of 1991, when U.S. forces left Iraq after driving Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait and the dictator turned his helicopter gunships on a Shiite uprising in the south and murdered thousands. When the U.S.-led coalition left, the world had turned its eyes away from Iraq. The Obama administration was determined to make sure that would not happen now, in Libya, where the conflict was presented by a mostly credulous Western media as a struggle between a tyrant and those __[who sought freedom and democracy](https://newsweekme.com/saudi-finance-minister-ibrahim-al-assaf-relieved-post-royal-orders/)__.

Obama decided to intervene in Libya, but he would let the French and the Brits take the lead. And after Qaddafi was gone, the U.S. would pull back. Obama had been conflicted in his decision, given his commitment to reducing U.S. engagement in the Middle East. A plan that did not involve large numbers of troops would conform with that, implying no long-term commitment of U.S. forces. And it enabled the Obama team to send a message: See, we’re so much smarter than the Bushies, who committed huge armies to Afghanistan and Iraq for years after those invasions, at a massive cost in lives and resources. Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would later call it an exercise of “smart power at its best.”

The military strategy involved heavy use of NATO air power from above, while the coalition would arm groups to take the fight to Qaddafi’s well-equipped army on the ground. Qatar, with the Obama administration’s blessing, flew in 20,000 tons of weaponry and handed it out to a variety of militias—many led by hard-core jihadis. That they were the heart of the opposition was inevitable: Salafist Sunni jihadis had been Qaddafi’s principal opposition for more than three decades. But as these militias became stronger, regional intelligence agencies became increasingly concerned. A significant number of the jihadis receiving arms and training were members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), hard-core Al Qaeda fighters and veterans of the U.S. war in Afghanistan, including several who had been scooped up on the battlefield or abroad and sent back to do prison time in Libya or at Guantánamo Bay.

There are significant differences of opinion now as to whether administration officials were warned in 2011 about the consequences of arming LIFG fighters—and others like them. A senior Middle Eastern intelligence officer says, “We had real concerns specifically as to who the Qataris were working with and giving weapons to…. We raised them \[with Washington\]. We didn’t get much response.” But a former senior U.S. intelligence official shrugs this off. “It wasn’t like the CIA didn’t know who these guys were,” says the official. “__Who else was going to do the fighting__?”

Qaddafi had contributed to the problem. In 2005, after reaching a deal with the West to give up weapons of mass destruction and during a rapprochement with Washington, his son, Saif Al Islam Qaddafi, persuaded his father to try to reach an accommodation with his Islamist opponents. In return for signing a document saying they would no longer oppose the regime, scores were released from Libyan jails, and dozens more who had been living in exile returned to Libya. These men happily returned to the battle once the regime was threatened in 2011.

A senior Arab intelligence official says he believes Qaddafi sought a deal with his Islamist enemies because he thought he was dealing from a position of strength. He had given up his nuclear and chemical weapons programs, as Washington had demanded, and had begun sharing intelligence with the U.S. “He had made his peace with Washington, he thought, and felt emboldened by that. That turned out to be a mistake,” the official says.

The same source—who works in a government whose relations with the Obama administration have been rocky but whose intelligence service still works closely with the CIA—says he and his agency were puzzled by Washington’s decision to turn on Qaddafi. “Wasn’t the core national interest of the United States regarding Libya—that it not possess weapons of mass destruction and not be overtly hostile—basically secured?” \n He adds that backing the rebels was shortsighted for many reasons. “Did they really think it was going to go smoothly in the aftermath? Why would they think that? Simply because they weren’t going to occupy the country? Not a lot of it made sense to us.”

Sure enough, Qaddafi’s death did not bring stability. A hodgepodge of Islamic militia groups oversee vast swaths of territory; some, loyal to Al Qaeda, have operated in Libya for decades and, like the LIFG, were critical in the fight to overthrow Qaddafi. Others are new.

In Sirte, on Libya’s northern coast, southeast of Tripoli, the black flag of Daesh now flies. Some 6,000 Daesh fighters have flowed into Libya over the past two years. According to a recent Human Rights Watch report, the group has diverted food and medicine to its fighters and carried out dozens of executions of civilians since August of last year. “Sirte residents,” the report says, “described scenes of horror—public beheadings, corpses in orange jumpsuits hanging from scaffolding in what they referred to as ‘crucifixions’ and masked fighters snatching men from their beds in the night.”

In January of this year, as Libya teetered, a U.N.-backed administration, the Government of National Accord, formed in exile, in Tunisia. In March, that government moved to Tripoli and is now gamely trying to end the anarchy. Militias loyal to it—aided by a handful of U.S. and U.K. special operations forces—started a month or so ago to take the fight to Daesh in Sirte. The militias have made gains, seizing land around the city, and fighting has been fierce—34 pro-government militia members were killed on January 21 and another 100 wounded. But so far, the assault has been inconclusive.

The Government of National Accord has asked that the arms embargo on Libya be lifted, and NATO has agreed to begin training Libyan government troops—though exactly when and where is still undecided. Three intelligence sources in the region tell *Newsweek* they expect, at some point, an increase in NATO troops on the ground in Libya. “It’s inevitable,” says one. “Libya is a strategic beachhead for them, a dagger aimed at Europe. NATO can’t tolerate that.”

In the meantime, more and more Libyans take what an International Office for Migration spokesman called “the preferred route” out of the country: boarding any vessel they can, no matter how flimsy, __to cross the Mediterranean to Italy__. More than 1,300 such migrants died trying in the first four months of this year.

Obama, to his credit, admitted in a recent interview with The Atlantic that his biggest mistake as president was Libya—specifically, failing to plan for the aftermath. He has also blamed U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron for getting “distracted” and the French for not following through to secure the country.

But his owning up to the mistake was nonetheless breathtaking, for a very obvious reason: Obama was elected in part for his opposition to a dumb war run by an administration that had no clue what would happen once Saddam was gone. That his administration—the purveyors of “smart power’’—would forget Colin Powell’s famous “Pottery Barn” rule—you break it, you own it—is beyond ironic.

It also poses a problem for Clinton, and forces her to answer for her role in the debacle—something the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has not yet had to do in detail, in part because Republicans became obsessed with the four deaths at the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya. That tragedy, it turns out, was but a harbinger of a much bigger, far more dangerous problem, whose menace grows by the day.
